This book tells of six men who joined the Royal Air Force and served as Sergeant Pilots in Fighter Command during the most intense period of fighting against the mighty German Luftwaffe during 1940 in the Battle of France, the withdrawal from Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain. George Unwin, ‘Taffy’ Higginson, Don Kingaby, Fred Barker, Percy Morfill and William Franklin. Some of these men joined the RAF during the late 1920s and early 1930s for a career with the service, others before the outbreak of the Second World War in the Volunteer Reserve Auxiliary, when the threat from Nazi Germany began to make war inevitable. Each biography covers their early years and their Wartime experiences during 1940, told either through their own words from interviews, family, friends and wartime comrades. Each airmen’s combat experiences are gleaned from flying log-books and combat reports, where possible. The class divide between the sergeants and officers of the Royal Air Force is also explored. Separated on the ground, but not whilst in the air, bullets and death had no recognition of rank. For their outstanding dedication and skill against the enemy during 1940, each was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal.
