Flying spitfires early in 1941 where he became an Ace with 485 squadron and then posted to Malta.
Returning to Britain, he crash landed his aircraft due to engine failure was captured and sent to Stalag Luft 111.
He was involved in the Great Escape but was in solitary confinement on the night of the escape,
which he believes saved his life.
