‘THE FASTEST VICTORY’

On the 16th August 1940, RAF Tangmere came under fierce attack from German aircraft including Ju87 Stukas of 3/STG2. which were protected by Messerschmitt 109’s of JG2.
Spitfires of 602 Squadron, based at the adjacent RAF Westhampnett airfield, were scrambled. Among them was that of Flight Lieutenant Findlay Boyd. Before he had crossed the boundary of his airfield and with the Spitfire's undercarriage still only part way up, Boyd was surprised to encounter a Stuka streaking across the treetops in front of him. A short burst of gunfire from Boyd fatally wounded the crew, with their Stuka force-landing, otherwise quite intact, in a nearby field. Boyd completed a circuit of his airfield and landed. He had been airborne for less than one minute. This is thought to have been the fastest RAF victory of the war.
