THE END OF VON WERRA On the 5th September 1940, high over the Weald of Kent, Oberleutnant Franz von Werra of JG3 was attacked and damaged by fighters from 41 Squadron. He was finally forced down by Pilot Officer Gerald ‘Stapme’ Stapleton of 603 squadron and after crash-landing, was soon taken prisoner. However, In 1941, von Werra achieved great notoriety by escaping from captivity in Canada, making his way back to Germany and rejoining the Luftwaffe.
